Differential Social Impacts of Climate Change in the UK

SNIFFER Code: UKCC22

Year: 2009

Project Status: Complete

Short description: The project will inform the development of activity on climate change adaptation in the UK by developing a greater understanding of social impacts and the role of inequalities. The project may also be expected to inform the development of the UK Adaptation Policy Framework, and the anticipated Scottish Adaptation Strategy. The objectives of this proposal are to: • Identify the elements of the UK Climate Change Scenarios which are likely to have the most significant social impacts • Review literature on the social impacts of related phenomena, incorporating work on the current impacts in the UK (of e.g. flooding) which are forecast to increase under climate change projections, together with work looking at the impacts of climate change on e.g. human health on the global scale • Synthesise the above elements into an analysis of the social impacts of climate change projections for the UK, with a particular focus on how existing social inequalities will affect exposure, sensitivity and adaptation to these impacts • Identify where adaptation measures will need to consider these social impacts • Organise a workshop to present the findings of the research to UK policy-makers and regulators working on social as well as environmental issues, in order to communicate the research findings and initiate debate on how to act upon them
