Board of Trustees

SNIFFER's board of Trustees is responsible for the activities of the company including strategy formation and review.


Philip Wright

Philip has been SNIFFER's chairman since 2000. Philip is a civil engineer by training and until his retirement in 201 was  Deputy Director, Climate Change, Scottish Government. Philip has taken an active role n supporting Scottish Ministers in the development and implementation of Scottish Government policy on climate change, and continues to retain a strong interest in this area.


Ken Ledgerwood, OBE

Prior to his retirement Ken was chief inspector in the Industrial Pollution and Radiochemical Inspectorate of the DOE Environment and Heritage Service in Northern Ireland (now NI Environment Agency)


Ruth Wolstenholme

Ruth is responsible for leading the company, having been involved in SNIFFER’s growth from a small research coordination role in the early 1990s, to the knowledge broker that it is today. With previous experience in environmental consultancy and with SEPA, Ruth is enabling the company to develop its partnership role across government/agencies and to a wider sector.


Professor James Curran, MBE

James Curran is the Director of Science and Strategy at SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency). James has worked in environmental science and regulation for 30 years - from research into clouds, building an automatic weather station on Cairngorm, studying pollution in the sea, managing hydrological stations and assessing flood risk and installing flood warning schemes. In 2006 James co-founded and then ran Entrading, the UK's first comprehensive eco-store and cafe in central Glasgow. James was awarded MBE for services to the environment in 2007.


Colin Garvie

Colin is a Chartered Accountant who for the last 20 years has managed his own training and consultancy business, Square 1, acting as a non-executive director and external consultant to a variety of businesses in both the UK and Europe. He also provides  a wide range of professional training courses to clients in both private and public sectors.  Prior to operating his own business, Colin worked for 3i plc.


Richard Dixon

Richard is Director of WWF Scotland. He has been at WWF since 2002, following 8 years as Head of Research at Friends of the Earth Scotland. During this time Richard has covered issues from air quality and bathing water to chemical pollution and waste policy, and is currently engaged with climate change policy. 


Andrew Llanwarne

Andrew runs a consultancy, IDEAction, advising organisations in sustainable development, knowledge management, strategy and economic development.  He was previously a Director at Scottish Enterprise following 10 years in the tourism sector, and maintains an interest in tourism through his website walkingstories.com.


Ian Shearer

Ian was for almost 7 years Director of Operational & Technical Affairs at the Scotch Whisky Association, the representative body for whisky companies, and dealt with a wide range of regulatory policy affecting the industry – including on the environment, energy and climate change.  He is currently Interim Director of the Scottish Retail Consortium.


David Dunsire, company secretary

David is executive partner of Tods Murray plc. His main areas of practice are in company law and corporate finance

Conference on Strategic Environmental Assessment “SEA as a tool to contribute to high-level policy objectives” 7 May 2010, University of Strathclyde

This conference brings together a variety of expert perspectives – from policy advisors, local authority officers, consultants and academics – to discuss the practical application of SEA and the outcomes and implications of using SEA as a vehicle to deliver high-level policy objectives. This conference sponsored by SNIFFER and ESRC (Economic and Social Research council) will make a vital contribution to discussion about the overall purpose and benefits of SEA, together with the efficacy of delivery mechanisms proposed to achieve overall Scottish governmental aims.
