Supporting sound decision making for environmental protection.

Environmental Regulation

Environment agencies across the UK share key aims of ensuring that policies and regulations are:

  • supported by the most up to date and sound scientific evidence;
  • informed by a broad range of expertise and stakeholders; and
  • utilise the best available tools and techniques for environmental protection

SNIFFER manages a partnership-based research and knowledge exchange programme for the environment agencies in the UK. The Environmental Regulation Programme delivers an annual portfolio of projects designed to meet the joint interests of the agencies and other users of the research in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

This dynamic programme aims to facilitate engagement between users of research thus providing an expanded knowledge base, while delivering research outputs of common interest to the agencies. The four themes of the Environmental Regulation Programme are:

  • Climate Change
  • Better Regulation
  • Sustainable Resource Use
  • Environmental Strategy, Tools and Techniques

Each year a programme of projects is jointly planned by the agencies. For 2010-11, the Environmental Regulation Programme will take forward the following projects:

  1. Tidal technologies and marine renewable energy: a workshop to consider the key issues for environmental regulators
  2. Climate change indicators: A workshop to identify key partners, data and a forward programme
  3. Demonstrating the economic benefits of the environmental goods and services sector
  4. Assessing risk based regulatory approaches in the UK
  5. Identifying methods for encouraging regulated sectors to minimise their environmental impacts and increase compliance
  6. Low carbon technologies: a workshop between business and environment agencies to share and understand the latest advances

Please have a look at some of our completed projects. Each report is accompanied by a short summary to provide you with key information, outputs and partners. SNIFFER hopes that through the Environmental Regulation Programme, we can fulfil the crucial role of providing the science/policy interface, by facilitating the uptake of evidence through to delivering outcomes for environmental protection. Conference on Strategic Environmental Assessment “SEA as a tool to contribute to high-level policy objectives” 7 May 2010, University of Strathclyde

This conference brings together a variety of expert perspectives – from policy advisors, local authority officers, consultants and academics – to discuss the practical application of SEA and the outcomes and implications of using SEA as a vehicle to deliver high-level policy objectives. This conference sponsored by SNIFFER and ESRC (Economic and Social Research council) will make a vital contribution to discussion about the overall purpose and benefits of SEA, together with the efficacy of delivery mechanisms proposed to achieve overall Scottish governmental aims.
