Sniffer is looking for a Communications Consultant with expertise in climate resilience and adaptation
This is a Short term opportunity, Contract value up to £15,000, December 2022 – end March 2023.

At Sniffer we are creating a flourishing and fairer future for all in a changing climate. We have an exciting opportunity for a consultant to work with us over the next few months to help us communicate our complex climate resilience and adaptation projects to a wide range of audiences and sectors.

The key focus will be to support us in communicating the outcomes and impact of our work in delivering the Adaptation Scotland programme, as well as more generally across Sniffer’s other activities. We are looking for someone who is experienced in designing narratives and communication approaches to bring about change.

Background
Sniffer is a Scottish charity that acts as a catalyst, fostering collaboration across sectors and places to ensure transformation towards a flourishing and fairer future for all in a changing climate. One key element of our work, funded by the Scottish Government, is to deliver the Adaptation Scotland programme to support organisations, businesses and communities to increase resilience and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

What we are looking for
We are looking for short term support in telling the stories of a range of projects. We have great success stories to tell. To provide a flavour, the type of projects that we would like to communicate and promote include work on climate justice, financing adaptation, locally led adaptation projects across the Highlands and Islands, an adaptation route map for communities, and our adaptation work in the Outer Hebrides. We will also be sharing and communicating evaluation and learning about the impact of our programme activities over recent years.

This role will involve working with Sniffer staff and others to write about projects and their outcomes, shaping how these are presented on the Adaptation Scotland website and Sniffer’s website where applicable. The role will involve sharing updates and insights through a range of social media channels. There may be some media interaction, but this would not be a priority. Please note that our focus is on adaptation and climate resilience rather than the journey to net zero.

This is offered as a short-term consultancy project.

The role
The role will involve:

  • Working with us to understand our needs and to develop a clear, timed implementation plan, including being clear about the roles for team members and others
  • Agreeing the way in which projects are to be communicated, including writing style, to ensure we are effective in reaching our public, third and private sector audiences, as well as the wider public
  • Agreeing the key projects to be communicated and writing the story of their impact
  • Leading an update of the Adaptation Scotland website, archiving past projects and using the website as a platform to communicate our latest resources, projects and news
  • Sharing our stories using a range of social media platforms.

Skills, knowledge and experience
We are looking for someone who:

  • Has strong interest in climate and environmental issues, particularly in relation to adaptation and resilience and can understand the subject matter
  • Has experience of writing for impact, including for senior stakeholders in the public, private and third sector. This must include ability to write in plain English that will be accessible to our audience
  • Has experience of writing website content and structuring websites to achieve impact
  • Has ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with Sniffer’s team and external stakeholders
  • Is organised with excellent project management skills, an ability to plan ahead, meet deadlines, logically address any challenges, set priorities and communicate on progress
  • Is comfortable with our values of inclusivity, collaboration, creativity, changemaking and kindness.

Location
Sniffer is based in Edinburgh and we would like to meet in person on a fortnightly basis, however we are open to considering fully remote options.

Timeline
We are looking for someone who can work with us between December 2022 and March 2023 on a jointly defined timeline.

The fee
Our maximum budget is £15k (including VAT).
